When do people cover those billboards with boobs, gambling, and entertainment acts on I-15 from Mojave to Las Vegas? Do they work at night? If not, is an unlimited supply of sunscreen included in their contracts?
And while listening to the National Park station, the announcer said, “The Mojave Desert is where people go to be alone.” Am I insecure or does this notion scare the shit out of anyone else?

Oh yes, it should scare you. Not if a) you find yourself needing to be alone that badly (in which case you probably don't give a fuck), but if b) you stumble upon others who are desperately trying to be alone. Particularly if you are unarmed. Because they certainly aren't.
People go alone but with guns? Wow, that is so not the poetic desert retreat I thought it would be.

Have spent a decent amount of time out there. Not enough to be an expert, but enough to have formed strong semi-founded opinions.....vast truth filled over-generalization:
People go to the desert to be left the fuck alone.
They go to less hostile environments - forest, beach, etc. - for meditative retreats.
